What is an Organic Aromatherapy Massage?
Aromatherapy massage is simply a massage with essential oils blended into the massage base oil. Organic means I only use organic essential oils where possible. Essential oils are the fragrant, highly concentrated natural constituents that are found in plants. They are what give the plant its characteristic odour and contain the healing power of the plant from which it was extracted.
During an aromatherapy massage essential oils are absorbed into the body in two ways. Firstly by breathing the aroma in - the molecules of the scent pass up through the nose and stimulates receptors which send messages to the limbic brain. This is the oldest part of the brain and deals with emotional and psychological responses. Secondly through dermal absorption of the skin - the oils are able to pass through the outer layer of the epidermis, through the capillaries and into the blood stream. The response from the oils can range from stimulating to relaxing, determined by the specific qualities of the essential oil being used.
What are the benefits of having an Aromatherapy Massage?
Essential oils enhance the massage experience tremendously. According to the properties of the oil used they can deeply relax, lift a mood, or wake you up and keep you focused and alert. Some are hormone balancing (good for PMT and menopause), some are great for the digestion, and some help boost the immune system. Most are anti-bacterial and antiseptic, a few having antifungal properties too. As a qualified aromatherapist I am trained to blend oils. So each time I give a massage I ascertain what is needed and create a blend to suit the individual on that day.
Do I need to specify I want aromatherapy oils used when I book?
No you don't. I combine both the Swedish/ Therapeutic massage with the essential oils anyway. At each massage whatever has been booked I ask whether the recipient would like essential oils used. Some prefer just base oil with no smell but most people opt for aromatherapy! Even people who have it just to try become hooked once they feel the added benefits. There is no extra charge for using the oils, all my massage prices are the same with or without oils. Traditionally aromatherapy massage is a very gentle soft massage, designed primarily to apply the essential oils to the skin. However I find most people prefer a deeper massage. I will ask at each appointment and tailor the massage to what is needed. Some days people need gentle, other days there may be a specific problem where deep tissue techniques are called for.
